What Drives Your Decisions?

Every day we are faced with decisions. Decisions on what we should wear, decisions on what we should eat, decisions on how we drive, decisions on how to interact with one another. Decisions, decisions, and more decisions. Have you ever wondered what drives your decisions? If you really think about it, you probably base them on what benefits you most. What outfit will give you confidence. What food will taste good. What outcome will put you on top. What answer will bring you comfort. We hate to admit it but we are a nation of selfish individuals. Regardless if its intentional or not.

I will be the first to admit that I am selfish. A lot of my decisions are based on how the outcome will effect me. I am not proud of that but it is the hard truth. When the hard truth is put right in front of us we have another decision to make. Do we want to accept it? And if we accept it, do we want it to continue?

I do not want to be selfish but the moment we are born, we are sinners. Psalm 51:5 states, "For I was born a sinner— yes, from the moment my mother conceived me". The moment we enter this world, we are destined for selfishness. But it is by the grace of God that we are forgiven for these selfish desires. God sent His son down to earth to experience our selfish human nature. Jesus had a front row seat! Yet he was never selfish. In fact, Jesus was the opposite. In all of Jesus' acts, He had one purpose; to glorify God. By centering God in every decision he faced, he was selfless.

I believe this is the key to resolving our intrinsically selfish behaviors. If we begin to focus on God and His will in everything we do, our decisions will be Chris-centered. If our minds and hearts are overflowing with the greatness and beauty of Christ, and the sacrifice he's made for us, it is not likely we will be perceived as selfish. We will be able to step out of our selfish instincts and see the world and others how God sees them.

So, do you accept this hard truth? If you do, what are you going to do about it? Because the decisions we make are what define us.

Philippians 2:3-43 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
